From Hamlet to Harry Potter - Using Literature in the Classroom

Who is this course for?

Experienced teachers with a good standard of English, working with secondary or adult students. Participants should be at Common European Framework Level C1 (Advanced).

Course aims

  • To examine current developments in teaching methodology for integrating literature and language teaching
  • To critically evaluate a range of literary materials for exploitation in the classroom and to prepare appropriate tasks.

Course programme

The course is taught through a series of informal lectures, seminars and workshops.

Topics typically include:

  • Using literary texts as a teaching resource
  • Practical classroom ideas for exciting literature lessons
  • Exploiting play scripts
  • Well-loved poems
  • Ideas for encouraging creative writing
  • Working with Shakespeare and other classic writers
  • From book to film
  • The thriller and other genres
