Who is this course for?

Teachers of English with a good standard of English (Language level: C1) who wish to extend their own knowledge of English language and culture.

Course aims

This course explores different aspects of modern life and culture with an emphasis on London. It incorporates a varied programme of guided visits, supported by talks by visiting speakers and class discussion. You will have ample opportunity to build up a portfolio of authentic materials to support the cultural component of your teaching. You will also get teaching ideas on how to exploit the materials.

Course programme

Topics include:

  • Family life
  • Education, including school visit
  • Youth culture
  • Ethnic diversity
  • Government and politics, including a tour of the Houses of Parliament (when open)
  • The law, including a visit to the Old Bailey
  • The arts, including a visit to the National Gallery

Overview

  • Each week will be a self-contained unit, including visits, visiting speakers and materials development and work on mini-projects on selected topics.
  • The main themes of this course are: Education, Government and Politics, The Law and the Legal System, The Press.

EU funding

EU funding to the value of 1500 euros is available for teachers from the European Union and Associated Countries.
