Advanced Language and Culture


Who is this course for?

Teachers with a good command of English (Language level: C1) who wish to extend their language knowledge and skills and discover techniques for teaching advanced English.

Course aims

  • To enhance participants’ own awareness of spoken and written native-speaker English
  • To demonstrate the way in which contemporary British life and attitudes are reflected in the changing language
  • To present ways of teaching cross-cultural awareness
  • To investigate appropriate teaching material for cross-cultural awareness

Course programme

This course is taught through a series of textual study sessions, information talks and seminar discussions. The course will provide first-hand experience of activities that can be adapted for use with students. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on these techniques and consider which teaching ideas can be most easily adapted to their context. Topics can include:

  • Language in the media
  • Aspects of contemporary literature
  • Educational issues
  • Humour and social stereotypes
  • Language change
  • Regional and social language variation

EU funding

EU funding to the value of 1500 euros is available for teachers from the European Union and Associated Countries.
