About the course

Bell's University Foundation Programme is a comprehensive one-year academic course divided into three terms. It is specifically designed to prepare international students for a successful university career and focuses on three specific areas of learning:

Enhance your language level through:

  • Language development

    Focus on grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, both general and subject-specific, through intensive English language tuition.

  • Skills development

    Develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Learn how to write an essay in English, give a presentation, listen to a lecture and read and interpret academic texts.

  • IELTS Preparation

    Prepare and practice for the IELTS exam to ensure you achieve the score you need for entry into a British university. Exam fees are included in your tuition costs and you will receive help enrolling for the test.

  • Study skills

    Develop essential study skills such as note-taking, summarising, reading strategies, oral presentations, research techniques, essay and report-writing, interpreting data and exam preparation skills.

  • Life in Britain

    Discover more about Britain's history and culture, and gain the confidence and knowledge you need to live and study in the UK. The course includes visits to places of interest and each week, guest speakers give lectures on a variety of topical issues.

  • Information technology

    Develop essential computing skills for studying at university, such as word processing, managing spreadsheets and databases, creating presentations and designing for the web.

Business Studies
Business structures & organisations, business objectives & strategy, change & growth management, starting a small firm, marketing & finance, people & operation management

Economics
Free market economies, demand & supply, costs & revenues, market failures, national income, growth & living standards, inflation, unemployment, balance of payment deficits

Law
Sources of law, the English legal system, criminal law, the civil law, contract law

Maths
Pure mathematics, statistics, decision methods, problem-solving, algorithms, probability, sampling, hypothesis testing, critical path analysis and flows in networks.

Media, Communication and Culture
Media analysis, concepts of genre and narrative media, representation & reception, media industries, texts and meanings in communication, verbal & non-verbal communication, interpersonal & group communication, culture, context & communication.

Politics
Political culture & voting behaviour, electoral systems, political parties, pressure groups & protest movements, the politics of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, political traditions, alternative ideologies: Environmentalism

Sociology and anthropology studies
Evolution of humanity, social structures, beliefs, values, kinship, marriage and crime. The module involves areas such as science, history, religion, philosophy and archaeology.


Assessment

Your progress is continually assessed through exams and a variety of assignments. Final results are based on module marks and the IELTS score. After successfully completing the course, you will receive:

  • The Bell Foundation Certificate, recognised by universities across the UK
  • End of course report
  • Record of marks
